In the fall of 2009, we (Lennox McNeary and Cheri Wiggins) were stressed out. Not only were we both practicing full time as physicians caring for hospitalized patients, but we were also busy moms, each with a young nursling at home. Work was stressful, sleep was fragmented, and our breast milk supply plummeted.
We passed a bottle of fenugreek back and forth but grew tired of the effects. (Smelling like maple syrup is a novelty for a little while, maybe about twelve hours.) We knew there had to be a better solution, one that didn’t involve taking medications or herbs.
We researched galactogogues (substances that increase breast milk production) and discovered that some foods have the ability to boost breast milk supply. But we needed a tolerable way to combine all of these ingredients. Cookies, we thought--that’s the answer!
After work was done, family was fed, and the kids were in bed, we spent our nights in the kitchen. We worked on recipes for months, with a goal of creating a delicious, healthy cookie, one we could look forward to eating. And of course, it had to increase milk production.
After 35 attempts, we were satisfied. The cookies were tasty, but not overly sweet. They had lots of whole grains, just the right amount of yummy extras, and no artificial ingredients or preservatives. We daydreamed about them. We called them Milkin’ Cookies.
We shared them with our friends, who were thrilled to discover that the delicious cookies boosted their milk production too. We realized that other moms might benefit from Milkin’ Cookies, so we created The Mommy Doctors Bakery. In the past three years, moms all over the US have used Milkin’ Cookies to help meet their breastfeeding goals. It’s been an amazing, busy, and exhilarating experience, and we look forward to seeing what the future holds.
